LOS ANGELES – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr., Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León and Proposition 39 (the California Clean Energy Jobs Act) co-chair Tom Steyer will visit Marshall High School tomorrow – one of the first Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) school sites that will receive Proposition 39 funding – to discuss the state’s ongoing commitment to boosting energy efficiency in California’s schools.

Proposition 39 was approved by voters in 2012 and closed a $1 billion corporate tax loophole, directing revenues for five years, beginning in 2013-14, to eligible energy projects such as energy efficiency upgrades and clean energy generation at schools. Proposition 39 will invest hundreds of millions of dollars of new revenues in helping to create clean energy jobs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save energy and costs for schools.
Examples of energy efficiency and clean energy projects funded by Proposition 39 include: repairs to heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; new chillers, boilers and furnaces; new lighting and lighting control systems; installation of energy-efficient windows, programmable thermostats and thermal window shades; and on-site clean energy generation such as solar photovoltaic systems.
Eligible local educational agencies – including county offices of education, school districts, charter schools and state special schools – are encouraged to apply for Proposition 39 funding by submitting an energy expenditure plan to the California Energy Commission.
