SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments.
Johanna Arias-Bhatia, 43, of Los Angeles, has been appointed to the California Board of Psychology. Arias-Bhatia has served as fair hearings and government affairs manager at the South Central Los Angeles Regional Center since 2004 and was a health consumer advocate at Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County from 1999 to 2003. She earned a Juris Doctorate degree from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Arias-Bhatia is a Democrat.
Andrew Harlem, 44, of San Rafael, has been appointed to the California Board of Psychology. Harlem has been a clinical psychologist in private practice since 2004 and has served on the editorial board of Psychoanalytic Dialogues since 2011. He has been an associate professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies since 2006, where he served as director of clinical training from 2006 to 2010. Harlem was a United States Peace Corps volunteer from 1992 to 1994. He earned a doctorate degree in human development from the University of Chicago and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School/Cambridge Health Alliance. Harlem served as president of the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology board of directors from 2009 to 2011. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Harlem is a Democrat.
Nicole J. Jones, 44, of Los Angeles, has been appointed to the California Board of Psychology. Jones has been the director of external affairs at Crystal Stairs Inc. since 2011. She was the associate director of corporate and foundation relations at Loyola Marymount University from 2008 to 2011, a senior program director at Southern California Grantmakers from 2007 to 2008 and program director at The California Wellness Foundation from 2002 to 2007. Jones served as program officer and program associate at the California Community Foundation from 1998 to 2001. She was a fellow and special assistant for the National Urban Fellows from 1997 to 1998 and was a fellow with the Coro Fellows Program from 1996 to 1997. She served as a field representative for California State Assemblyman Kevin Murray from 1994 to 1996 and as Watts field deputy for Los Angeles City Councilmember Rudy Svorinich Jr. from 1993 to 1994. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Jones is a Democrat.
John Preston, 62, of Shingle Springs, has been appointed to the California Board of Psychology. Preston has been a professor at Alliant International University since 1999 and a professor emeritus since 2010. He has been a psychologist in private practice and free-lance teacher and writer since 1988. Preston worked in multiple positions at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group from 1981 to 1988, including chief psychologist and psychologist. He earned a doctorate degree in psychology from Baylor University. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Preston is a Democrat.
Fred Dubick, 57, of Calabasas, has been appointed to the California Board of Optometry. Dubick has been the owner of StudioEyes Optometry since 1980 and was an optometrist at David B. Soll, MD and Associates from 1979 to 1980. He served as commissioner on the Public Safety Commission of Hidden Hills from 2000 to 2004. Dubick earned a Doctor of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Redlands. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Dubick is a Democrat.
Glenn Kawaguchi, 47, of Newbury Park, has been appointed to the California Board of Optometry. Kawaguchi has been a managing optometrist at Eyexam of California since 2011 and was an eye care director at Sears Optical from 2006 to 2011. He worked in multiple positions at Eyexam of California from 1993 to 2006, including regional optometric practices manager and managing optometrist. Kawaguchi was an associate optometrist for David Sherman O.D. from 1992 to 1993. He earned a Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern California College of Optometry. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Kawaguchi is registered decline-to-state.
