Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Proclamation

PROCLAMATION
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. transformed America by challenging us to bridge our differences and strive for equality. His ideals remain the benchmark for equality and fairness. Dr. King’s words and actions continue to inspire millions of Americans and others around the globe. As he faced discrimination throughout his life, he consistently pushed to ensure that future generations would live as equals.

Dr. King once said “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” I ask the people of California to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy by transforming their communities through service. If each of us takes time each month to help those in need, the impact we can make is limitless. A great resource for volunteer opportunities near you is www.CaliforniaVolunteers.org.

As we celebrate Dr. King’s legacy, I thank all those who embrace his work and advance the noble causes of equality, civil rights and service.

NOW THEREFORE I, EDMUND G. BROWN JR., Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim January 15, 2011 as “Martin Luther King, Jr. Day”.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 1st day of February 2011.
