SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued the following statement regarding the Trump Administration’s proposal to undermine the Clean Power Plan:
“This is a declaration of war against America and all of humanity – it will not stand. Truth and common sense will triumph over Trump’s insanity.”
The Trump Administration’s proposal encourages the use of coal – and undercuts the nation’s commitment to clean energy.Governor Brown last year reaffirmed California’s commitment to exceed the targets of the Clean Power Plan and blasted the Trump Administration’s decision to roll it back. In 2015, California joined a coalition of more than two dozen states and municipalities across the country to defend the Clean Power Plan.
California is on track to produce 33 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2020 and under SB 350, signed by Governor Brown in 2015, will produce 50 percent of its energy from renewables by 2030 and double the rate of energy efficiency savings in California buildings. California has met its 2020 target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions below 1990 levels four years early, and in 2016, Governor Brown signed SB 32, which commits California to reducing greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 – the most ambitious target in North America.
California – which is playing a world-leading role in building strong coalitions of partners committed to curbing carbon pollution in both the United States and around the globe – will convene the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco next month. At the Summit, representatives from subnational governments, businesses and civil society will showcase the surge of climate action around the world, and make the case that even more must be done.
