Governor Brown Announces Appointments

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments:

Ross Lai, 57, of San Francisco, has been reappointed to the Dental Board of California, where he has served since 2013. Lai has been director at Lai Enterprises Inc. since 2005 and owner at Ross Carlton Lai DDS since 1985. He was a prosthetic assistant for implant dentistry at the Highland Hospital Alameda County Medical Center from 2006 to 2008. Lai earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Lai is registered without party preference.

Thomas Stewart, 70, of Bakersfield, has been reappointed to the Dental Board of California, where he has served since 2013. Stewart has been a dentist in private practice since 1976. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1978 to 1997 and in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps from 1972 to 1976. Stewart earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Howard University College of Dentistry. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Stewart is a Republican.

Henry Hansel, 67, of Santa Rosa, has been reappointed to the California Consumer Motor Vehicle Recovery Corporation Board of Directors, where he has served since 2013. Hansel has been owner and president at the Hansel Auto Group since 1973. Hansel is chairman of the Northern California Ford Dealers Advertising Association Board of Directors, president of the Northern California Toyota Dealers Advertising Association Board of Directors and a member of the Northern California Honda Dealers Advertising Association Board of Directors. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Hansel is a Democrat.

Kathryn Ellen Doi, 57, of Sacramento, has been reappointed to the California New Motor Vehicle Board, where she has served since 2013. Doi has been a partner at Hanson Bridgett LLP since 2014. She was a partner at Murphy Austin Adams Schoenfeld LLP from 2008 to 2014, where she was senior counsel from 2007 to 2008. Doi was an associate at Greenberg Traurig LLP from 2005 to 2007 and senior counsel at Livingston and Mattesich from 2004 to 2005. She served as senior deputy legal affairs secretary in the Office of the Governor from 2002 to 2003. Doi was counsel to the secretary at the California Technology, Trade and Commerce Agency from 2000 to 2002 and staff counsel at the California Commission on Judicial Performance from 1994 to 2000. She was an associate at Orrick Herrington and Sutcliffe LLP from 1986 to 1994 and a law clerk at the U.S. Court of International Trade from 1985 to 1986. She earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Davis School of Law. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Doi is a Democrat.

Rahim Hassanally, 38, of Fairfield, has been reappointed to the California New Motor Vehicle Board, where he has served since 2013. Hassanally has been owner at Momentum Auto Group since 2010 and at Infiniti of Fairfield since 2006. He is secretary of the Toyota Lexus Minority Dealers Association Board of Directors and a member of the California Consumer Motor Vehicle Recovery Corporation Board of Directors, National Automobile Dealers Association Board of Directors and the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers Board of Directors. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Hassanally is registered without party preference.
