SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments:
Carla J. Thornton, 37, of Moreno Valley, has been appointed to the California Veterans Board. Thornton has served as associate director of development at the University of California, Riverside since 2014, a victim advocate for the U.S. Air Force Reserve since 2007 and logistics manager for the U.S. Air Force since 1997. She was fund development coordinator at Human Options from 2012 to 2014 and combined federal campaign fund manager for the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 2009 to 2011. Thornton serves in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and served active duty from 1997 to 2008. She earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Southern California School of Social Work and a Master of Arts degree in management from the University of Redlands. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Thornton is a Democrat.
Cornelious Burke, 30, of Sacramento has been appointed to the California African American Museum Board of Directors. Burke has been public policy manager at the Bay Area Council since 2014. He was a real estate officer at the California Department of General Services from 2013 to 2014 and a legislative assistant in the Office of California State Senator Curren D. Price, Jr. from 2011 to 2013, where he was a special assistant to the chairman of the California Legislative Black Caucus from 2011 to 2013. Burke was a capital fellow in the Office of California State Senator Kevin de León from 2010 to 2011. He earned a Master of Public Administration degree and a Master of Urban Planning degree from the University of Southern California, Sol Price School of Public Policy. Burke is a fellow in the Nehemiah Emerging Leaders Program, a member of the City of Sacramento Planning and Design Commission and class ambassador for the Loyola Marymount University’s African-American Alumni Association. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Burke is a Democrat.
Victor Griego, 60, of South Pasadena, has been appointed to the California African American Museum Board of Directors. Griego has been president at Diverse Strategies for Organizing Inc. since 1990. He is a member of Vecinos de South Pasadena. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Griego is a Democrat.
Todd Hawkins, 30, of Los Angeles, has been reappointed to the California African American Museum Board of Directors, where he has served since 2012. He has been a partner at Hawkins Mikita since 2013 and president at the Todd Group since 2007. Hawkins was an executive producer of the University of California, Los Angeles Jazz Reggae Festival from 2004 to 2007. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Hawkins is a Democrat.
Terri Holoman, 56, of Tarzana, has been appointed to the California African American Museum Board of Directors. Holoman was a realtor at R Hicks Realty, RE/MAX and Coldwell Banker from 2002 to 2006. She was a program controls analyst and project manager at Hughes Aircraft Company from 1982 to 1992. Holoman is a member of the St. Anne’s Foundation Board of Trustees, Black Alumni Board, University of Southern California Black Alumni Association and the Los Angeles Women’s Public Policy Institute class of 2015. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Holoman is a Democrat.
Zna Houston, 52, of Los Angeles has been reappointed to the California African American Museum Board of Directors, where she has served since 2012. Houston has been a senior assistant city attorney serving as special counsel for personnel standards and employee engagement in the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office since 1994. Houston was director of membership services for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses from 1992 to 1994. She was an attorney in private practice and counsel for Fox Inc. from 1989 to 1992. Houston was an associate at Littler Mendelson P.C. from 1987 to 1989 and a law clerk at the Writers Guild of America from 1986 to 1987. She is a member of the Pepperdine University School of Law Board of Visitors, past chair of the 9th Council District Community Advisory Committee and a past chair of small business for the 47th California State Assembly District Community Cabinet. Houston is a member of the John M. Langston Bar Association, Beverly Hills West California Chapter of the Links Inc., the Los Angeles Chapter of Jack and Jill of America and the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Houston is a Democrat.
Bari A. Williams, 36, of Oakland, has been appointed to the California African American Museum Board of Directors. She has been counsel at Facebook Inc. since 2014. Williams was counsel at the CSAA Insurance Group from 2012 to 2014, a program director at the California Minority Counsel Program from 2011 to 2012 and associate counsel at Risk Management Solutions from 2009 to 2011. Williams is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Emerge California Alumnae and the San Francisco Chapter of the Links Inc. She was a member of Alameda County Commission on the Status of Women from 2008 to 2013. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Williams is a Democrat.
Kenneth Flower, 84, of Atherton, has been reappointed to the 1a District Agricultural Association, Grand National Rodeo, Cow Palace Fair Board of Directors, where he has served since 2012. Flower was president of the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame from 2005 to 2007. He was manager of business development at the Golden Gate Bank from 1989 to 1999 and west coast manager at Westinghouse Broadcasting from 1987 to 1989. He was vice president of marketing, advertising, politics and community affairs for the San Francisco 49ers from 1977 to 1986, owner at Ken Flower Comms in 1976 and vice president of sales and marketing at National Football League Films from 1969 to 1976. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Flower is a Democrat.
Mara Kopp, 72, of San Francisco, has been reappointed to the 1a District Agricultural Association, Grand National Rodeo, Cow Palace Fair Board of Directors, where she has served since 2005. She served as a licensed clinical social worker and clinical program director at the San Francisco County Mental Health Department from 1968 to 1992. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Kopp is a Democrat.
Sergio Azzolino, 46, of San Francisco, has been reappointed to the California Board of Chiropractic Examiners, where he has served since 2012. Azzolino has been director of Azzolino Chiropractic Neurology and Integrative Wellness Inc. since 1995. He is an assistant professor of clinical neurology at the Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies and post-graduate preceptor faculty at Life University and at the Palmer College of Chiropractic. Azzolino was faculty at Life Chiropractic College West from 1996 to 1999. He earned a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life Chiropractic College West. Azzolino is a diplomate at the American Chiropractic Neurology Board and the American Academy of Pain Management and a fellow at the American College of Functional Neurology. Heather Dehn, 45, of Sacramento, has been reappointed to the California Board of Chiropractic Examiners, where she has served since 2012. Dehn has been owner at Dehn Chiropractic since 1995.
