Governor Brown Announces Appointments

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments.

Brian McMahon, 64, of El Dorado Hills, has been appointed senior advisor at the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, where he has served as undersecretary since 2013. McMahon was executive director at the California Employment Training Panel from 2007 to 2013, director of strategic initiatives at M.H. West and Co. Inc. in 2007 and executive director at the California Workforce Investment Board from 2005 to 2007. He was corporate vice president and west coast manager of Strategic Partnerships LLC from 2004 to 2005, president of the California Manufacturers and Technology Association from 1992 to 2004 and director at the California Trade and Commerce Agency, Office of Local Development from 1988 to 1992. McMahon served as chief of staff at the Office of California State Senator Robert Beverly from 1981 to 1985 and was an assistant consultant to the California State Senate Governmental Organization Committee from 1979 to 1981. He earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Golden Gate University. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $138,996. McMahon is a Republican.

André Schoorl, 56, of Sacramento, has been appointed undersecretary at the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, where he has served as senior advisor since 2014. Schoorl served as deputy director at the California State Assembly Speaker’s Office of Member Services from 2009 to 2014 and was director of the Los Angeles office from 2003 to 2008. He was a principal consultant for California State Senate President pro Tempore John Burton from 2000 to 2002 and chief of staff at the Office of California State Senator Richard Alarcón in 1999. Schoorl was a consultant for the California State Senate Majority Caucus from 1994 to 1998, for the California State Senate Office of International Relations from 1992 to 1993, for the California State Senate Office of Demographics from 1991 to 1992 and for California State Senate President pro Tempore David Roberti from 1985 to 1990. He served as a research assistant for the California State Senate Select Committee on Small Business Enterprises in 1984 and as an assistant for the California State Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Senate Special Services in 1983. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $147,912. Schoorl is a Democrat.

Amy L. Wilson, 45, of Woodland, has been appointed assistant secretary for policy, research and legislation at the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency. Wilson has been acting chief of staff at the Office of California State Assemblymember V. Manuel Perez since 2014, where she has served as communications director since 2009. She was a research associate at Harder and Company Community Research from 2004 to 2009, a founding staff member at the Yolo Community Foundation from 2003 to 2005 and operations coordinator and research assistant at the California Institute for Rural Studies from 2002 to 2004. Wilson was Russia program manager at the Initiative for Social Action and Renewal in Eurasia from 1995 to 2000, a development coordinator at the Government Accountability Project from 1993 to 1995 and a legislative fellow at the Friends Committee on National Legislation from 1992 to 1993. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $97,008. Wilson is a Democrat.

Benjamin Turner, 37, of Sacramento, has been appointed assistant director of legislation at the California Department of Conservation. Turner has been legislative director at the Office of California State Assemblymember Kevin Mullin since 2013. He was a policy consultant at the Office of California State Senator Fran Pavley from 2011 to 2012 and legislative director at the Office of California State Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski from 2010 to 2011. Turner was a legislative fellow for the California State Assembly Fellowship Program, a legislative aide at the Office of California State Assemblymember Pedro Nava from 2007 to 2010 and a geographic information systems specialist at the University of California, Santa Barbara Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration from 2006 to 2007. Turner earned a Master of Arts degree in geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $97,008. Turner is a Democrat.

Daniel Meza, 33, of Stockton, has been appointed to the 2nd District Agricultural Association, San Joaquin County Fair Board of Directors. Meza has been vice president and commercial lender at the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Central California since 2011. He was assistant vice president and commercial loan officer at the Community Bank of San Joaquin from 2009 to 2011, a relationship manager and agriculture industry specialist at Wells Fargo Bank from 2005 to 2009 and a manager and assistant grower at L&L Transplant Company in 2005. Meza was a logistics supervisor at Pacific Coast Producers from 2004 to 2005 and a loan officer at AgCredit of California from 2003 to 2004. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Meza is registered without party preference.
