SACRAMENTO – On behalf of all Californians, Governor Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown honor Staff Sgt. Robert E. Thomas Jr., who bravely gave his life in service to our state and nation. The Governor and First Lady extend their deepest condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.
In memorial, Governor Brown ordered that flags be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol today. Staff Sgt. Thomas’ family will receive a letter of condolence from the Governor.

Staff Sgt. Robert E. Thomas Jr., 24, of Fontana, CA, died September 13, at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, TX, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident in Maiwand, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, Fort Bliss, TX. Thomas was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
