Governor Brown Announces Appointments

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments.

Christopher Coppola, 51, of Los Angeles, has been appointed to the California Arts Council. Coppola has been owner and executive producer at Plaster City Productions Inc. and Christopher Coppola Enterprises since 1994 and director since 1987. He is founder of Project Accessible Hollywood. Coppola is a member the Independent Film Committee of the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Coppola is a Democrat.

Katie Dawson, 66, of Oakland, has been appointed to the Dental Board of California. Dawson has been a dental hygienist at Dahab Gaime, D.D.S since 2009. She served as a field specialist with the University of California, Field Office from 2010 to 2011 and was a dental hygienist for Damani M. Mitchell D.D.S. from 2001 to 2009. Dawson was a dental hygienist for James Sweeney D.D.S. from 1995 to 2002 and dental hygienist at P. Michael Hine D.D.S. from 1991 to 2002. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Dawson is a Democrat.

Judith Forsythe, 49, of Riverside, has been appointed to the Dental Board of California. Forsythe has been a director of education development at Pacific Dental Services since 2009, where she was director of back office development from 2002 to 2009. She was dental assistant at Pacific Dental Services Affiliated Office from 1998 to 2002. Forsythe was a registered dental assistant at Dental Associates of Riverside from 1995 to 1998 and a registered dental assistant at the Office of James W. Jacobson D.D.S. from 1983 to 1994. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Forsythe is a Republican.

Meredith McKenzie, 41, of Los Gatos, has been appointed to the Dental Board of California. McKenzie has been vice president and deputy general counsel at Juniper Networks since 2012. She was senior director of intellectual property at Symantec Corporation from 2006 to 2012, director of litigation, licensing and IP for Cypress Semiconductor from 2001 to 2006 and corporate counsel and director of IP at Enuvis Inc. from 2000 to 2001. McKenzie was an associate for Howrey LLP from 1998 to 2000 and patent agent and design engineer at Intel Corporation from 1993 to 1998. McKenzie earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the Santa Clara University School of Law. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. McKenzie is registered decline-to-state.

Yvette Chappell-Ingram, 64, of Altadena, has been appointed to the Dental Board of California. Chappell-Ingram has been president and chief executive officer at the African American Board Leadership Institute since 2010. She was president of the California Legislative Black Caucus Foundation from 2006 to 2010, principal at Ingram and Associates from 2004 to 2008 and vice president of development at College Bound from 2001 to 2004. Chappell-Ingram served as regional manager at the United Negro College Fund from 1997 to 2001, director of development for LA’s BEST from 1995 to 1997 and a project manager at the United Negro College from 1992 to 1995. She served as a consultant in private practice from 1989 to 1992 and was a financial analyst at ARCO from 1978 to 1989. Chappell-Ingram earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Southern California. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Chappell-Ingram is a Democrat.

Melodi Masaniai, 48, of Salinas, has been appointed to the California Board of Podiatric Medicine. Masaniai was a volunteer coordinator at Jerry Hill for State Senate in 2012 and campaign manager at Shawn K Bagley for DNC from 2011 to 2012, field coordinator at Jaime De La Cruz for Supervisor in 2012 and a consultant at Castillo Consulting LLC in 2011. She was a community organizer with Organizing for America in 2010, executive assistant at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center from 2002 to 2010 and executive assistant at Sun Microsystems Inc. from 1992 to 2002. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Masaniai is a Democrat

Mary Ellen Early, 60, of Sherman Oaks, has been appointed to the California Respiratory Care Board. Early has been an IT security analyst at Valley Presbyterian Hospital since 2007. She served in various positions at Valley Presbyterian Hospital from 1972 to 2007, including analyst patient care systems, MIS specialist and nursing computer liaison. Early was a ward clerk at Riverside Community Hospital in 1972 and was a nurse aide at Loretto Hospital from 1969 to 1972. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Early is a Democrat.

Sherrie-Ann Gordon, 30, of Los Angeles, has been appointed to the Dental Hygiene Committee of California. Gordon has served in various positions at AARP since 2006, including manager of multicultural markets and specialty programs, associate state director of multicultural outreach and senior operations associate and project manager. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100. Gordon is a registered decline-to-state.

Garry Shay, 57, of Reseda, has been appointed to the Dental Hygiene Committee of California. Shay has been an associate trial attorney at Stockwell Harris Woolverton and Muehl since 2012. He was senior trial attorney at Chernow and Lieb Law Offices from 2004 to 2012, trial attorney at Glauber Berenson and Salazar from 1999 to 2004 and associate at Richlin and Theofanis from 1997 to 1999. Shay was senior associate at Ingber and Ivey from 1988 to 1997 and managing attorney for the Law Offices of Gary A. Rosenberg P.C. from 1987 to 1988. He served as associate at Strantz Sobelsohn Elkin and Bradford from 1986 to 1987 and associate for the Law Offices of Lloyd Robinson and Associates from 1981 to 1986. Susan Good, 59, of Fresno, has been appointed to the Dental Hygiene Committee of California. Good has been owner at Susan Good Consulting since 2010. She was district director for California Senate Majority Leader Dean Florez from 2002 to 2010, and served in various positions at the 21st District Agricultural Association, Big Fresno Fair, including director, president and vice president from 2001 to 2005. She was district director for Senator Jim Costa from 1996 to 2002 and senior vice president at Bank One from 1988 to 1996. Andrew Drabkin, 44, of Sacramento, has been appointed to the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Drabkin has been IT director at the California Democratic Party since 2010, where he was deputy IT director from 2006 to 2010. He was staff for Phil Giarrizzo Campaign Consulting from 1999 to 2006. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Drabkin is a Democrat.

April Moreno, 38, of Upland, has been appointed to the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Moreno has been government relations analyst at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health since 2011. She was a child support officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Child Support Services from 2008 to 2011. Moreno earned a Master of Public Administration degree from California State University, Northridge. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Kari Williams, 28, of Los Angeles, has been appointed to the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Williams has been owner at Mahogany Hair Revolution Salon and Trichology Clinic since 2007 and was a hair stylist at Eclectic Salon from 2006 to 2007. She earned a Doctorate in trichology from Elan Center for Trichology. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Williams is a Democrat.

Mary Lou Amaro, 63, of Clovis, has been appointed to the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Amaro has been owner of Mary Lou’s Beauty Shop since 1977. She served as president of the California Cosmetology Association from 2011 to 2012. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Amaro is a Democrat.

Bill Brown, 56, of Lompoc, has been appointed to the California Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission, where he has served since 2010. Brown has been sheriff of Santa Barbara County since 2006. He served as chief of police at the Lompoc Police Department from 1995 to 2007 and chief of police at the Moscow Police Department in Idaho from 1992 to 1995. He has been a member of the California State Sheriffs’ Association since 2007 and a member of its Executive Board of Directors since 2012. Brown earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Southern California and is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Executive Institute. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Brown is a Republican.

Paul Keith, 69, of San Diego, has been appointed to the California Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission. Keith has been medical director of behavioral health at the Wellpoint West Region of Anthem Blue Cross since 2000 and medical director for integrated behavioral health since 1992. Previously, he was medical director of the Behavioral Health Unit at Palomar Medical Center from 2000 to 2009 and associate medical director of the public sector program at United Behavioral Health from 1997 to 1999. Keith was medical director at Vista San Diego Center and medical director of the child and adolescent program at Alvarado Parkway Institute from 1987 to 1994. He was owner and proprietor of Paul R. Keith M.D., A Medical Corporation from 1975 to 2009. Keith earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Baylor College of Medicine. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Keith is a Democrat.

David Pating, 54, of San Francisco, has been appointed to the California Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission, where he has served since 2007. Pating has served in various positions at The Permanente Medical Group since 1990 and has been chief of addiction medicine at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco since 1991. Pating has also been an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine since 1995. He is a member of the California Society of Addiction Medicine, the California Psychiatric Association, the California Medical Association, the California Hospital Association and the California Institute of Mental Health. Pating earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Pating is a Democrat.

Tina Wooton, 55, of Santa Barbara, has been appointed to the California Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission, where she has served since 2010. Wooton has been consumer empowerment manager at the Santa Barbara County Department of Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Services since 2009. Previously, she was a consumer and family member liaison at the California Department of Mental Health from 2005 to 2009 and served on the Mental Health Services Act Statewide Implementation Team. She was also the consumer liaison at the Mental Health Association of Sacramento and the Sacramento County Mental Health Department from 1997 to 2005. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Wooton is a Democrat.

Emiko Burchill, 31, of Sacramento, has been appointed special assistant for policy at the California Natural Resources Agency. Burchill was a contract attorney at Olson Hagel and Fishburn LLP in 2012. She was an executive fellow at the California Fair Political Practices Commission from 2011 to 2012 and was an intern at the office of Assemblymember Toni Atkins in 2011. Burchill was a volunteer attorney at My Sister’s House from 2010 to 2011 and an attorney at the Law Offices of McDowall Cotter from 2007 to 2009. She earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the Santa Clara University School of Law. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $79,260. Burchill is a Democrat

Katherine Johnson, 29, of Sacramento, has been appointed deputy secretary, special programs at the California Health and Human Services Agency. Johnson has been an assistant secretary for program and fiscal affairs at the California Health and Human Services Agency since 2012. She was a principal consultant at the California State Senate Committee on Appropriations from 2008 to 2012, an associate at the Dewey Square Group from 2007 to 2008 and a legislative aide and Senate fellow at the California State Senate from 2006 to 2007. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $108,288. Johnson is a Democrat.

Jeffrey Mason, 50, of Sacramento, has been appointed chief deputy commissioner at the California Department of Real Estate. Mason has been chief of the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services at the California Department of Consumer Affairs since 2010. He was manager of education and training and client relations at The Lyle Company from 2006 to 2009, project manager at InsWeb from 2005 to 2006 and owner-operator of a personal chef service and Jumpshots Coffee from 2003 to 2005. Mason served as manager of the new products and technology implementation team at AT&T Wireless Services from 1996 to 2003. He was legislative assistant at the office of Assemblymember Denise Ducheny from 1994 to 1995 and legislative advocate at Rees and Associates from 1992 to 1994. Mason was a legislative clerk in the California State Assembly Office of the Chief Clerk from 1990 to 1992, surgical assistant at Kaiser Hospital from 1987 to 1990 and hospital corpsman in the United States Navy from 1981 to 1987. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $105,420. Mason is a Democrat.

Yungsuhn Park, 33, of Los Angeles, has been appointed special assistant to the labor commissioner, Division of Labor Standards Enforcement. Park has been an adjunct faculty member at Loyola Law School since 2013. She worked in various positions at the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, from 2005 to 2013 including senior staff attorney and Skadden Fellow. Park earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $76,200. Park is a Democrat.
