SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. issued the following statement regarding Tuesday’s shooting death of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Detective Jeremiah Alan Mackay:

“Anne and I were deeply saddened to learn that a second law enforcement officer was killed in the line of duty by a desperate gunman. Detective Mackay gave his life bravely in service to his community and to California. We honor his sacrifice and send our condolences to his family, friends and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

We also thank the entire law enforcement community for their tireless work to apprehend the suspect.”

Detective Mackay, 35, was shot and killed in a gunfight with the wanted subject. He is survived by his wife and two children. Last Thursday, 34-year-old Riverside police officer, Michael Crain, was gunned down by the same subject while stopped at a traffic light in the city of Riverside.

In honor of Detective Mackay, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
