SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the appointment of Bunmi O. Awoniyi and Steven M. Gevercer to judgeships in the Sacramento County Superior Court.
Awoniyi, 48, of Elk Grove, has served as a principal attorney with a family law practice since 1994. She was an adjunct professor at the University of Northern California, Lorenzo Patiño School of Law from 1997 to 1998, an associate attorney at the Law Office of Steven L. Wessels from 1993 to 1994 and an associate attorney at the Law Office of Brady and Kent from 1992 to 1993. Awoniyi was a law clerk at the Law Office of D. Kapp Nees in 1991 and a crown prosecutor at the Crown Prosecution Service in London from 1989 to 1990. Awoniyi earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the Inns of Court School of Law, a Masters of Law degree from the University of Leicester School of Law and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Essex. She is a certified family law specialist. She fills the vacancy created by the conversion of a court commissioner position on December 3, 2011. Awoniyi is a Democrat.
Gevercer, 54, of Sacramento, has served as a senior assistant attorney general at the Attorney General’s Office, Civil Division, Tort and Condemnation Section since 2011, where he served as supervising deputy attorney general from 2008 to 2011 and deputy attorney general from 2005 to 2008 and from 1989 to 2001. Gervercer has been an adjunct professor at Lincoln Law School since 2000 and at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law since 1998. He was a legislative advocate at the Attorney General’s Office, Legislative Affairs Unit from 2001 to 2005, a senior trial attorney at the Sacramento County Public Defender’s Office from 1989 to 1997, a deputy public defender at the Tulare County Public Defender’s Office from 1985 to 1989 and a sole practitioner at the Law Office of Steven M. Gevercer from 1984 to 1985. Gevercer earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Gary S. Mullen. Gevercer is a Democrat.
The compensation for each of these positions is $178,789.
