SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments.
Ana Beltran, 33, of Los Angeles, has been appointed to the California Student Aid Commission. Beltran has been an academic counselor at the Humanitas Academy of Art and Technology at the Esteban E. Torres High School since 2010. She was an academic counselor and assistant to the principal at St. Matthias High School from 2006 to 2010 and a teacher and academic counselor from 2000 to 2006. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Beltran is a Democrat.
Jacqueline Doud, 72, of Glendale, has been appointed to the California Student Aid Commission. Doud has served in multiple positions at Mount Saint Mary’s College since 1991, including president emerita, president and provost. She was academic vice president at Woodbury University from 1984 to 1991. Doud earned her doctorate in higher education from Claremont Graduate University. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Doud is a Democrat.
Timothy P. White, 63, of Riverside, has been appointed to the California Student Aid Commission. White has been chancellor and professor at the University of California, Riverside since 2008. He was president and professor at the University of Idaho from 2004 to 2008. White served in multiple positions at Oregon State University from 1996 to 2004, including dean, provost, executive vice president and interim president. He served as professor and department chair at the University of California, Berkeley from 1991 to 1995 and professor and chair at the University of Michigan from 1977 to 1991. White earned his doctorate in physiology of exercise from the University of California, Berkeley. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is a $100 per diem. White is registered decline-to-state.
Josephine Kao, 17, of Roseville, has been appointed to the State Board of Education. Kao is a student at Mira Loma High School and has been a guest services associate at Skatetown Roseville since 2011. She is a member of the Nestle Very Best in Youth Foundation Board, a commissioner on the Placer County Youth Commission and a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. Kao was declared champion for the Central Valley Spelling Bee by the Sacramento Bee in 2009 and was the United States Figure Skating Association national synchronized skating championships finalist in 2011. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem.
Cipriano Vargas, 20, of San Diego, has been appointed to the California State University Board of Trustees. Vargas is a student at California State University, San Marcos, studying sociology and women’s studies and serving as the Associated Students vice president of external affairs since 2012. He was a peer mentor for the College Assistance Migrant Program and social justice officer from 2011 to 2012. Vargas is a member of the Vista Future Farmers of America and the California State University San Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Vargas is registered decline-to-state.
Gary Hart, 69, of Sacramento, has been appointed to the California Subject Matter Project Advisory Board for History and Social Science. Hart has served as the chair of the Public Policy Institute of California Board of Directors since 2011 and as a member of the board since 2003. He served as the director of the California State University Institute for Education Reform Policy Center from 1995 to 2007, served as the California secretary for education for Governor Gray Davis from 1999 to 2000 and served in the California State Legislature from 1974 to 1994. Hart earned a master of arts in teaching from Harvard University. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Hart is a Democrat.
Mimi Silbert, 70, of San Francisco, has been appointed to the Board of State and Community Corrections. Silbert has served as chief executive officer and president of the Delancey Street Foundation since 1974. She was the director for the Center for Institutional Change at San Francisco State University from 1973 to 1975. Silbert earned her doctorate in criminology from the University of California, Berkeley. This position requires Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Silbert is a Democrat.
