PROCLAMATION BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA

Over the past thirty years, obesity has become a huge problem in the United States. People are eating too much and moving too little. Today, one in three American children is overweight or obese, conditions that can lead to diabetes, cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Fortunately, this outcome is not inevitable because people can change the way they live and what they eat. Millions of Americans have already discovered that good food and regular exercise are not just healthful; they can also be a source of pleasure. Children will change their habits if adults set the example of self-restraint and regular exercise.

In 2010 First Lady Michelle Obama launched the Let’s Move campaign to promote exercise and healthy eating as a cure for America’s obesity problem. I fully support the First Lady’s efforts and encourage my fellow Californians to get involved. Many resources are available at the website LetsMove.gov.

NOW THEREFORE I, EDMUND G. BROWN JR., Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim June 16-17 2012, as “Let’s Move California! Weekend.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 14th day of June 2012.
