Governor and First Lady Honor Spc. Vilmar Galarza Hernandez

SACRAMENTO – On behalf of all Californians, Governor Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown honor Spc. Vilmar Galarza Hernandez, who bravely gave his life in service to our state and nation. The Governor and First Lady extend their deepest condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.

In memorial, Governor Brown ordered that flags be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol today. Spc. Hernandez’s family will receive a letter of condolence from the Governor.

Spc. Vilmar Galarza Hernandez, 21, of Salinas, CA, died May 26, in Zharay, Kandahar province, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA. Hernandez was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
