Governor Brown Issues Statement on Death of Buena Park Police Department Officer

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. today issued the following statement regarding the death of Buena Park Police Department Officer Daniel Ackerman:

“Officer Ackerman’s untimely death is a painful loss for his family, friends, and colleagues. Anne and I extend our condolences as we mourn the passing of a dedicated public servant.”

Officer Ackerman, 31, of Tustin, died Saturday after participating in a SWAT training exercise in Fullerton on Friday. After completing an obstacle course, Officer Ackerman stated he was not feeling well. Moments later, he lost consciousness and was transported to Saint Jude Medical Center, where he died Saturday.

Officer Ackerman had served with the Buena Park Police Department since becoming an Explorer with the Department in 1995. He became a reserve officer in 2001 and was promoted to police officer in 2005.

He is survived by his mother, Cynthia Thompson, of Cypress and daughter, Avery Ziegler, who turned two years old Friday.

In honor of Officer Ackerman, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
