PROCLAMATION
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA
Official statistics indicate that almost 16 million men and women are employed in California. These individuals are among the most creative and productive people found anywhere in the world. They constitute the backbone of the State’s economy and possess the vision and determination to keep California up among the best.
Government, business and labor have each been deeply committed to the safety and health of working men and women in the Golden State. By working together as Californians first, labor and industry have joined with one another to prioritize workplace safety through outreach and education efforts.
In 1911, the first Industrial Accident Board was formed to improve health and safety conditions in the workplace. In 1973, the California Division of Occupational Safety & Health (Cal/OSHA) was established and has since implemented landmark safety standards and regulations that continue to lead the way for other states and the Federal Government.
Workers’ Memorial Day is a time to remember the courage and integrity of California’s workers and to renew our commitment to securing safe and healthy working conditions for all employees.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, EDMUND G. BROWN JR., Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim April 28, 2011 as “Workers’ Memorial Day”.
