SACRAMENTO – On behalf of all Californians, Governor Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown honor Seaman Benjamin D. Rast, who bravely gave his life in service to our state and nation. The Governor and First Lady extend their deepest condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.
In memorial, Governor Brown ordered that flags be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol today. Seaman Rast’s family will receive a letter of condolence from the Governor.

Seaman Benjamin D. Rast, 23, of Niles, MI, died April 6 while conducting a dismounted patrol northeast of Patrol Base Alcatraz, Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned as a hospitalman to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. He was stationed at Naval Medical Center, Expeditionary Medical Force Detachment, San Diego, CA . Rast was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
